HIPAA Transactional Interoperability

HERAE is committed to ongoing growth in our interoperability.

Transactional interoperability between compliant systems is one of the key requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and was Federally mandated on 10/16/2003. Accordingly, as a HIPAA compliant system, the HERAE application is capable of receiving, processing, and delivering 835 transactions in the mandated ASC X12 4010x091A1 format. Furthermore, any billing system that is also HIPAA compliant must be able to receive and process those compliant 835 transactions.

The 835 transactions produced by the HERAE application will use an asterisk (*) as the element separator, the colon (:) as the composite element separator, and the tilde (~) as the segment terminator. These separators may be modified, on a case-by-case basis, if a specific billing system requires a different set of separators.

Upon request, the HERAE application will deliver compliant 835 transactions to a specific location at the client site. At the client’s option, SFTP is available as a transport mechanism. While any compliant billing system must be able to process the compliant transactions produced by the HERAE application, the following billing systems are those that are currently accepting and processing 835 transactions from the HERAE application:

  • IDX
  • LSS
  • McKesson
  • MedDocs
  • Medinformatix
  • Medisoft
  • PTOS
  • Raintree

Many more billing systems are in production and are expected to be HERAE certified in the near future, inlcuding:

  • Sunquest Clinical Financials
  • BCA
  • Siemens
  • Zoll
  • RMT
